This year Jack was Buzz Lightyear for Halloween.  In keeping with our tradition we had the families over for a Halloween party and Trick or Treating in our building.  After everyone got to the apartment and gave Jack his candy buckets we had some apps and then put Jack in his costume.  He LOVED it.  He kept saying, “Infinirty enbeyon!” which, if you don’t speak Jack is, “To infinity and beyond!”

We gave him his Halloween bag and he went to get the bucket of candy for the trick or treaters who were coming to our place and proceeded to dump all of the candy into his bag.  He tried to do it the easy way.

The trick or treating went even better than last year.  He kept running around knocking on doors.  He did not try to go into anyone’s apartment this year, which was good.  We were smarter this year and sent scouting teams to the lower floors to find the apartments with candy so that when Jack got to that floor we just pointed him in the direction.  Every time he got to a floor someone would say, “Jack, I found one, do you want to go?” and he would scream “Yes yes yes!” and go running.  It was great.  He also had the biggest smile on his face every time someone gave him candy.

When it was over Jack only wanted a little bit of the candy.   We will probably end up splitting it and bringing it into work to let our co-workers get fat.

Next year… definitely something Star Wars!

Every year The Bronx Zoo has Halloween themed activities for the month of October called “Boo at the Zoo.”  We went last year with Jack and it was a lot of fun.  This year we continued the tradition and made our way the whole ten minutes to the zoo.

In order to keep his real costume clean, we put Jack in his Fireman’s uniform.  We didn’t want to ruin Halloween with a dirty costume.  We had a really great time.  Jack saw a whole bunch of animals.  We went to the Tiger exhibit and all Jack cared about were the fish that are in the swimming hole.  Four giant, majestic tigers and Jack is standing in front of the aquarium telling me that the big black fish looks, “just like Nemo!”

The polar bear was very cool.  It was just hanging out about 25 feet from the railing.  We also saw some deer, a snow leopard, giraffes and butterflies.  We also got a chance to see the Dora and Diego 4D Experience.  I think they went a little overboard with the water as we were visibly wet when the movie was over.

Got some great pictures with the new camera.  I’m starting to figure a few things out, but I still have a lot to go.  We had a great time and we can’t wait to do it again next year.

My sister is getting married next weekend and Jack is going to be in wedding party.  At first we were going to rent him one, but Men’s Warehouse does not rent tuxedos below a 3T.  So, then we needed to try to find one to buy. Hoping to not spend a lot of money, since this was really going to be a single use item.  I managed to find one on eBay… don’t worry, it was new, not used.

The first one was too small.  I thought I had all the measurements right, but I guess I do not have a future as a tailor.  After a quick exchange, which was easier than I had originally thought, we got the right size.

I’d say he looks pretty debonair.

Jack was old enough this year to actually carve a pumpkin, so while we were in VT we picked up a good one.  At the store I picked out the NY Giants carving kit.  It was the worst piece of junk ever.  The stickers used to keep the stencil in place were useless.  The paper kept falling.  Nothing was working out.  We figured Jack would probably want a regular Jack-O-Lantern anyway.  So, I bagged the Giants stuff and set to make a regular pumpkin.

First we needed to cut the top and scrap out the inside.  I gave Jack the scoop and he set to work.  Except that he could scoop anything out and any time a piece of pumpkin or seed got on him, he cried and made me wash it off. Eventually, it was too much for him and when a big chuck got on the back of his hand, he threw up.

Back to the pumpkin… we gave Jack some crayons and told him to help me draw.  I had finished cleaning out the pumpkin, so it was only a matter of carving and decorating.  Jack watched me carve and then he drew on some hair.  I guess we will try again next year.

October in VT 2010

We headed up to VT this October with Mike and Nicole again.  This year we were joined by Jonah (Mike and Nicole’s son) and Ed and Katie.  This little Fall tradition of ours is growing.  With a near cancellation by the Needleman’s (more on that later) we all had a great time.

Spend Friday just bumming around the house and getting everything set up.  Jonah had a fluctuating fever, so the Needleman’s didn’t make it up Friday as they had planned. We discovered a new pizza place that had extremely passable pizza for VT.  Jack had a successful night’s sleep.  All in all, it was great.

Saturday we spent a lazy morning just hanging out until Mike, Nicole and Jonah got there.  Then it was shopping and laying around watching college football.  I will let you figure out who went where.  Jack was running around like a mad man.  I think he just likes having more space than a 2 bedroom apartment to run around in.

Saturday night we had a giant Mexican feast.  Gotta love make your own taco night.  Ed and Katie put together a great dinner while the rest of us tended to our kids.  Dinner was really good.  They will definitely be invited back next year. Then we watched Hot Tub Time Machine, which everyone else but me and Jen had seen.  It was hysterical.

Sunday was a bit of a whirlwind.  We had to clean up the whole house and do all the laundry.  Mike and Nicole decided to head out early to take Jonah to the doctor since he still wasn’t feeling well.  The rest of us went out for breakfast.  Then Ed and Katie went for some follow up shopping and the Shaw’s hit up the Pumpkin Patch.

The Pumpkin Patch was very cold and much more crowded that last year.  They had a Bouncy House, which Jack had a good time in.  Then we walked around and picked up some pumpkins.  We were all very full from breakfast, so no cider doughnuts were had… but it was still a lot of fun.

Can’t wait for 2011!

The Count’s Halloween Spook-tacular

Having gone to Sesame Place over the summer, we had a free ticket to go any other time this year.  We decided we were going to wait for the fall to go near Halloween for The Count’s Halloween Spook-tacular.  Basically they decorate Sesame Place for Halloween and have all the characters in costume.  The kids can wear their costumes and go trick or treating at some of the rides.  We brought Jack’s costume, but it ended up being a very hot day and we figured he would be too hot in his Buzz Lightyear jump suit.

The first ride we went on was the Grover roller coaster.  It was MUCH faster than it looked.  Jack was so excited.  He was laughing and having a great time on the way to the top… but once we headed down, he was scared.  Not too scared that he was crying or asking to get off, but he couldn’t decide if he wanted to smile and laugh or be scared.  He didn’t want to go on again… but he said he had fun.

Other than that we just had a great time walking around.  Saw some of the characters.  Ate lunch.  Went on some rides.  He made me go on the cargo nets again.  This time I only had to go up since he wanted to take the stairs down.  Of course, the section he wanted to go on had a 5 foot vertical climb.  I had to push him up and then scramble to climb up before he ran down the stairs.  I’m not exactly built for vertical climbing… but I made it.

We can’t wait to do it again next year!

Jack’s First Day of School

I know.  I know.  How can this be his first day of school?  He’s too young!  Well, it’s pre-school.  And it’s only 2 days a week.

BUT IT’S STILL HIS FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL!

Absolutely crazy.  I can’t even believe it.  I feel like it was only yesterday we brought him home from the hospital.  But here he is, with his backpack and first day of school clothes.  What a little boy he has become.

So, the school is really nice.  There are a lot of children who attend “classes” here.  Jack’s class is 8 kids; 4 boys and 4 girls.  Today it was just the boys and it was only for a half hour.  it was mostly so we could fill out some paperwork and the kids could see the classroom and meet the teachers.  There are 2 teachers.

Everything is really great.  The teachers seem nice.  The room is small, but comfortable.  They have a lot of toys to play with.  They have a bulletin board for the kid’s art projects.  There are cubbies for their things.  it’s everything you would expect in a pre-school, I guess.

Jack really seemed to enjoy it.  Mostly I think he enjoyed playing with the new toys.  We’ll see how it goes when there is class time and when we leave him there alone.  of course, the only time Jack did cry was when it was time to leave.  He kept saying he wanted to go to school.  I think he’ll be okay.

Jack’s First Train Ride to NYC

Normally when we go to the City with Jack we drive in.  Its convenient enough for us to drive and most times when we go in we are going to the Upper West Side or Upper East Side.  Plus, in the past he was younger and we wanted to have quick access to get home if need be.  Since we had nothing to do on Saturday we decided to take the train into the City and walk around a little.

The train ride was fun.  I’m not sure he was completely blown away by it, but he did enjoy looking out the window.  On the way home he even got a smiley face ticket from the conductor.  Coming home he got to eat the rest of his lunch looking out the window of the train.  It was successful and I’m sure we will do it again.

While we were in the City we went to Bryant Park to let him run around a little.  Turns out Bryant Park has a little carousel and an outdoor children’s “library.”  We went on the carousel and read some books in the little outdoor library area.  We can’t wait to do it again!

Eating Ice Cream at the Park

Went to the “big park” with Jack today after we got home from VT.  When we got there there was a Mr. Softee Truck.  Not the ghetto Jolly Joe truck that sells fake Good Humor and hot dogs.  Not the Good Humor truck.  A real Mr. Softee.  So, Jack got an ice cream cone.  After careful deliberation he decided on chocolate with chocolate sprinkles.  I was hoping for vanilla because I figured I was going to be eating a lot of it, but he wanted the chocolate.  We had our ice cream and played in the sprinkler in our clothes.  It was fun.

I am trying a new video program/site on my phone.  People can watch what I am filming live from www.qik.com/sjshaw361.  I am going to try to let people know when I’m doing something and see how it works.  In the meantime, enjoy the video below…
